Things to do with a 1- or 2-year-old in Las Vegas

A toddler needs somewhere to run that is fenced, somewhere to splash that is shallow, and a storytime that forgives wandering. Las Vegas has all three in every part of the valley — the trick is knowing which ones are built for this age and which just tolerate it.

Toddler storytimes and library play

Toddler storytime is a different animal from the baby version: shorter books, more movement, a parachute if you are lucky, and an expectation that half the room will be on its feet. LVCCLD branches like Whitney, Enterprise, West Charleston and Spring Valley run them weekly during the school year, and Henderson’s Gibson and Galleria branches do the same. Several branches also have a dedicated early-learning play space that is open whenever the library is, which is the quiet secret for a 2-year-old on a 110° afternoon.

The toddler landing page goes deeper on library choices by neighborhood. Here, the list at the top is simply everything in the next two weeks whose age range includes a 1- to 3-year-old, with the free sessions marked. Storytimes usually do not require registration; craft sessions sometimes do, and the event page says which.

Playgrounds, splash pads and museums that fit

The playgrounds that work for this age are the ones with a separate fenced toddler structure, low platforms and shade sails. Cornerstone Park in Henderson, Aliante Nature Discovery Park in North Las Vegas and Exploration Park in the southwest each have a small-kids section where you can sit down for a second. Sunset Park and Craig Ranch are bigger and busier; they are better once your toddler can hold their own against 6-year-olds.

From late spring into early fall, zero-depth splash pads are the toddler outing. No standing water, soft surfacing, and usually a shaded bench for you. The splash pad guide lists which pads have a gentle toddler zone and which are more of a water cannon fight. Indoors, the Discovery Children’s Museum has a dedicated toddler area that is genuinely separated from the big-kid floors — it is paid admission, so watch the free museum days post.

  • Fenced toddler playgrounds: Cornerstone Park, Aliante Nature Discovery Park, Exploration Park, Centennial Hills Park.
  • Splash pads: free, roughly May through September, zero-depth pads are kindest to new walkers.
  • Library play spaces: open during branch hours at many locations, no program needed.
  • Discovery Children’s Museum toddler area: indoors, paid admission, best right at opening.

How the Walker stage works on Little Funday

We label age bands with stages because “1–3” hides a lot: a 14-month-old and a nearly-3-year-old want different things. Walker is our name for that whole band. Each event carries the age range its organizer gives, and we match on overlap — an event for “2–5” shows for your 2-year-old, an event for “ages 4+” does not. With two kids, say an 18-month-old and a 6-year-old, the matching range is the union of both, so you see what either could attend. Browse the full set of stages at kids events by age.

Attention spans run about fifteen to thirty minutes at this age, so we show the length of every session and you can lean toward the short ones. If a morning goes sideways, nothing on this page is far from a park with a bench.

Questions parents ask

What is there to do with a 1-year-old in Las Vegas on a weekday?

Library storytimes are the anchor — nearly every LVCCLD and Henderson branch has a toddler session on a weekday morning. Pair it with the library play space or a fenced playground on the way home. The list above shows what fits a 1-year-old over the next two weeks; the weekend page covers Saturday and Sunday.

Are splash pads safe for a toddler who just started walking?

The zero-depth ones are, which is most of the valley’s public pads. Look for soft surfacing and a toddler-scale section away from the big sprayers; bring water shoes because the surface gets hot. Our guide notes which pads have a gentle zone.

Which playgrounds in Las Vegas are fenced?

Fencing varies by park and even by section. Cornerstone Park, Aliante Nature Discovery Park and Exploration Park have enclosed or well-contained toddler areas; many newer neighborhood parks in Summerlin and Henderson do too. Use places mode in Explore to check a specific park before you go.

My toddler lasts about twenty minutes anywhere. Does that matter?

Not at all — that is the stage. Every event here shows its length, and most toddler storytimes are built around a twenty-minute span. Pick things that are near a park or a snack and treat the activity as the first half of the outing, not the whole thing.
