Things to do with preschoolers in Las Vegas

Somewhere around three, outings stop being about containment and start being about curiosity. A preschooler can sit through a real story, finish a craft and walk a short trail asking questions the whole way. This page lists what Las Vegas offers that age in the next two weeks.

Storytimes grow up, and crafts begin

Preschool storytime is where libraries start teaching rather than soothing: letter sounds, rhyming, a longer picture book and a craft tied to the theme. Most LVCCLD branches run one each week — Rainbow, Clark County, Sahara West and Centennial Hills are consistently busy — and Henderson’s Paseo Verde and Green Valley branches do too. These sessions double as gentle pre-K readiness: sitting in a group, following two-step instructions, using scissors with supervision. The storytime guide compares the branch formats.

Craft hours and simple STEAM sessions start appearing at this age as well, usually on weekday afternoons or Saturday mornings. Some need registration because supplies are limited; the event page tells you. Everything in this family of programs is collected under creative events, and the live list above already filters it to the 3–5 range.

Nature programs, trails and first museum visits

This is the first stage where the valley’s nature programming really opens up. Clark County Wetlands Park runs family walks and nature-center activities that suit a 4-year-old’s legs, Springs Preserve pairs its trails with hands-on exhibits, and Red Rock Canyon’s visitor center has junior programs aimed at exactly this curiosity. Red Rock charges per vehicle and sometimes needs a timed-entry reservation in the cooler months, so check the organizer page before you drive out.

Museums become worthwhile rather than merely survivable. The Discovery Children’s Museum has several floors a preschooler can actually use, and the Las Vegas Natural History Museum’s dinosaurs land hard at this age. Both are paid admission; the free museum days post tracks when that changes. Seasonal festivals — fall harvest events at parks, spring community days, holiday lights — also work now, as long as you go early and leave before the meltdown.

  • Nature: Wetlands Park family walks, Springs Preserve trails and exhibits, Red Rock junior programs (vehicle fee applies).
  • Museums: Discovery Children’s Museum, Natural History Museum, Springs Preserve; paid admission, watch for free days.
  • Festivals: park-run seasonal events, usually free; arrive at opening for shorter lines.
  • Playgrounds: Sunset Park and Craig Ranch now fit; see playground events.

Why we call this stage Explorer

Little Funday shows ages as developmental stages instead of raw numbers, and Explorer is the 3–5 band. Behind the scenes each event stores the age range its organizer publishes, and we match whenever that range overlaps yours. A program listed for “4–8” appears for your 4-year-old; one listed for “toddlers 1–3” drops away once your child turns three. If you have a preschooler and a baby, we combine both ranges and show events that suit either, so you can plan one outing for the whole crew. The remaining stages are listed on the by-age page.

Preschoolers are also the age at which free and paid start to diverge, since museums and ticketed festivals enter the picture. Toggle free only in Explore if the budget is the deciding factor this week.

Questions parents ask

What can a 4-year-old do in Las Vegas for free?

Preschool storytimes and craft hours at any library branch, nature walks at Wetlands Park, park festivals and the bigger playgrounds at Sunset Park and Craig Ranch. The free things to do page covers the whole valley; the list above narrows it to this age.

Are the Red Rock Canyon junior programs suitable for a 3-year-old?

Usually the ranger-led family programs welcome preschoolers with an adult, though the content is pitched a little older. Check the age note on the organizer page, bring more water than seems reasonable, and remember there is a per-vehicle fee and, in some seasons, a timed-entry reservation.

Which library programs help with kindergarten readiness?

Preschool storytimes are built around early-literacy skills — rhyming, letter sounds, listening in a group. Craft and STEAM hours add fine-motor practice. Any LVCCLD or Henderson branch will do; the branch nearest you is the one you will actually attend weekly.

Is a preschooler ready for a festival or an outdoor event?

Yes, with limits. Go at opening, pick one or two activities, and plan to leave within ninety minutes. Shade and a bathroom matter more than the program. Our weekend page flags the family-oriented festivals coming up.
